Maldives Immigration has conducted inspections on two expatriate worker accommodation blocks in Hulhumale', and taken eight expatriates into detention.

Immigration said these searches were conducted under an operation run last Thursday in Hulhumale' Phase 1. The operation was carried out by trainee officers of Immigration.

These operations led by Immigration and the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology aim to identify expatriates living and working outside of laws and regulations. Under these, they are inspecting cafe's, restaurants, spas, salons, as well accommodation premises. Undocumented expatriates, as well as those working against their work permits are being deported.

In the operations spanning over the last eight months, 4054 expatriates have been deported to date. As per Immigration's statistics, the highest number of deportations were in July.

Late last September, Immigration also issued written notice to 92 Maldivians employing expatriates against regulations. They were cautioned that legal action would be taken against them unless necessary changes were made within a provided time.
