'Serial' sexual assaulter placed under house arrest

Maldives Police Service on Thursday, revealed that a 30-year-old man previously arrested over the attempted rape of a 64-year-old local woman, in the island of Meedhoo, Addu Atoll, was now placed under house arrest.

The incident was first reported to the police on May 28, at approximately 1035 hours. Soon after his arrest on May 29, authorities discovered that the man had sexually assaulted two other women aged 66 and 65, respectively, on the same day as the assault on the 64-year-old.

According to police, the individual was placed under house arrest by the Meedhoo Magistrate Court upon expiry of his remand.

Moreover, a police spokesperson revealed that the individual had filed for appeal at the Prosecutor General's Office.

In an interview with local media Mihaaru, family members of the 64-year-old victim revealed that she had suffered physical and mental damages from the incident, as confirmed by medical professionals and through assessments conducted by the Ministry of Gender, Family and Social Services.
