In order to resolve the coconut shortage on the market, State Trading Organization (STO) has decided to wholesale coconuts.
STO said that those who wish to purchase coconuts on a wholesale basis need to inform them and make a booking, upon which it will be brought and supplied to them. Last year, STO wholesaled onions as well, with prior bookings.
At present, the price of a coconut in the market is between MVR 40 to 60.
To bring down the price, STO also sells coconuts from STO People's Choice at MVR 20 per kilo. The company said that more stocks of coconuts will be brought in in order to meet the demand.
Wholesale buyers can make bookings through contacting STO People's Choice on 3012575, or through messaging 7291124 via Viber.
STO imports coconuts from India. They said that shipments would be brought in every ten days depending on the amounts booked. Payments for bookings are to be made in MVR after the shipment arrives.
STO said that their aim is to offer a solution to the difficulties in sourcing foreign currency, challenges in importing, and to ensure there is adequate stock in the market to avoid loss to businesses and inconvenience to the general public.
This year, STO brought in 24 varieties of food items for Ramadan and are selling these at controlled prices.
