Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) said that the people on board a Landhoo boat on route to Noonu Atoll had been transferred to Kaafu Gaafaru after the boat ran aground on Tuesday morning.

MNDF had received reports that the boat started sinking around 11 on Tuesday morning.

They said the people of Gaafaru as well as nearby vessels had been assisting the people on board the vessel.

"Coastguard are on route to the site," MNDF had shared with the media in Dhivehi.

Council member of Gaafaru Mohamed Sham'aan had said to Mihaaru news that all 30 passengers on the boat had arrived to Gaafaru. He said that all of them were doing well.

"Except for two people, all passengers on board were Maldivian. One woman was aboard, who had been taken to the (Health) Center as she was a bit sickly. She is also doing well," he said.

Sham'aan said they had provided shelter for all passengers on the boat.

Videos circulating on social media shows a large number of gas containers adrift after the boat had sunk. A fishing vessel from Gaafaru has been seen attempting to pick up the drifting containers.

This accident occurred while the relevant authorities have advised caution during sea travel as Maldives is experiencing rough seas accompanied with heavy rains these days.
