President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said that on islands that have been approved for building of housing units, the unit can be built on private land of applicants if requested.

Speaking to the residents of Meedhoo last night during his ongoing visit to Dhaalu atoll, the President said that 200 housing units will be built on that island as well.

However, in the instance that an applicant has a private plot of land and lacks means to construct a house there, the government housing unit can be built on that land, the President said. These housing units will have three bedrooms.

The President said that although it is, in effect, a flat building project, building a similar unit on private land will be facilitated where requested. Once the number of people applying for this is determined, the remaining number of housing units will be built at a location determined for the project on the island.

He requested the Meedhoo Council to compile a list of those who wish for housing units to be built on their own land and to share this with the ministry.

The President said that the same would be applied to islands besides Meedhoo where building of housing units has been planned. He appealed to councils to share this information with the ministry befroe the end of Ramadan.

The President said that he had made this decision because it is a preference of a large number of people. However, he highlighted that the housing loans introduced by this government are also convenient and available.

The President asserted that the housing issues faced by Maldivians across the country will be resolved during this term in office.
