The government’s electric taxi service, operated by MTCC, is set to launch in the first week of July, Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen said.

Speaking on state media PSM, Minister Ameen said the initiative aims to address long-standing challenges in the current taxi system, including limited availability, inconsistent service, and lack of discipline among some drivers.

“The service will be available 24/7 through an app-based booking system, similar to services like Uber and Grab,” Ameen said.

The Minister said that MTCC has selected a supplier and is finalizing preparations, including vehicle charging and maintenance.

Around 1,500 taxis are currently registered in Male', but public complaints persist due to drivers working on their own schedules and refusing some routes.

Minister Ameen said the new service will ensure reliability, standardization, and discipline in public transport.

Initially, 100 electric vehicles (EVs) will be deployed for the service.

The taxi line will be launched in three phases:

- Phase 1 (2024): Male', Hulhumale', and Velana International Airport (VIA)

- Phase 2 (2026–2027): Vilimale' and Thilafushi

- Phase 3 (2028–2029): Rasmale’, Giraavaru, Addu City, Fuvahmulah City, and Haa Dhaalu atoll Kulhudhuffushi

“This is something the people have demanded. We need a system that puts the public first,” the Minister Ameen said, adding that the model is inspired by countries where the government regulates taxi services.
