Island Aviation, which operates the national airline Maldivian, has said that the introduction of Premium Economy class will in no way affect the availability of Economy class seats.
The company made the statement in response to public concerns that the introduction of Premium Economy may result in difficulties in purchasing lower priced Economy seats.
"We are not stopping Economy class trips. What we have done is introduce a specific amount of seats as Premium Economy with additional services on existing flights. We introduced this so as to offer improved travel experience," an Island Aviation official said.
They said that economy seats can still be booked without difficulty even with the introduction of Premium Economy class.
The company said that the Premium Economy class seats will be available at different prices for different routes. All customers will have the option to opt for economy or premium economy when making their bookings.
Premium Economy was introduced by Maldivian on last Wednesday, with the service to commence from April 13 onwards.
Premium Economy passengers are provided a baggage allowance of 25kg, and granted priority in changing travel dates, as well as during check in. Those traveling in Premium Economy can also use the Moonima Lounge at the airport, where meals are also available. Lounge services are available in Dharavandhoo and Ifuru in addition to Male'.
In-flight meal options will also be better for Premium Economy passengers, and they will be the first to receive baggage after flights.
