Former Ambassador of Maldives to Japan, Ahmed Khaleel, has been presented the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star by the Emperor of Japan.
The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star is one of the orders under the Order of the Rising Sun, established in 1875 by Japanese Emperor Meiji. It is awarded by the Emperor of Japan to both Japanese and foreign individuals in recognition of meritorious service over a long duration.
The honour was bestowed upon Khaleel in recognition of his services in strengthening the friendly relations between Maldives and Japan.
This is the first time a Maldivian has been granted this honour.
Khaleel, who also served as former Minister of State for Foreign Affairs has over 40 years of experience in foreign relations.
During his tenure as Ambassador to Japan, he organized a symbolic donation of over 700,000 cans of tuna to Japan following the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami in 2011.
Khaleel's efforts in continuing to strengthen ties between Japan and Maldives led to many development projects funded through Japanese grants.
The former administration also presented him with the Most Distinguished Foreign Service Medal.
Khaleel retired from foreign service in 2023.
