Orange Warning issued from Baa atoll to Dhaalu atoll

MET issued the Orange Warning for torrential rain and thunderstorms with flooding expected over a large part of Maldives from midnight to 3 am.

Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) has issued an Orange Warning from Baa atoll to Dhaalu atoll.

MET issued the Orange Warning for torrential rain and thunderstorms with flooding expected over a large part of Maldives from midnight to 3 am.

Earlier MET issued a Yellow Alert for torrential rain and thunderstorms with gust winds of 45 mph from Kaafu atoll to Meemu atoll until 1 am.

The weather alert was raised from Yellow to Orange with an additional atoll just one hour after it was was initially issued.

The MET's alert system includes White Alert, Yellow Advisory, Orange Warning, and Red Warning. The Orange Warning, which is alert level 3, is issued following 90 mm of rainfall in one hour or 120 mm of rainfall in six hours accompanied by heavy rain and flooding hazards.

While Male' area has observed continuous rainfall since this afternoon, many roads have flooded with Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Fire and Rescue working on flood control measures.

Authorities are also working on placing sandbags in flood prone areas to mitigate damage to properties and goods.

With heavy rainfall and thunderstorms forecasted in the coming the days, MET has urged the public to exercise caution at this time.
