Fenaka Corporation has said that while the priority at present is to find a quick solution the intermittent power cuts in Addu, the company is working alongside the government to find a permanent solution to the issue as well.
Residents of Addu have been persistently raising concerns about the continued powercuts in the connected islands of Addu that have gone on for over six months now.
When asked about the issue, Fenaka Managing Director Mohamed Najah told Mihaaru News that the current priority is to find a quick resolution to the power cuts. He said that repair of the generators are nearly completed, with three new generators also having been taken to Addu over the past three months.
He said that the most recently shipped generator arrived in Addu last night, with it expected to be operational within 48 hours, with efforts to speed up service.
Najah said that at present, 19 generators are in use to provide electricity to the connected islands of Addu, with the largest being of 2MW. The other generators are generally of 1.8MW or smaller.
'A permanent solution can be brought through using larger generators instead of multiple smaller ones. The biggest one in use now is of 2MW. But Addu currently needs generators of even larger capacity. That is the permanent solution," he said.
Najah said that Fenaka is working in collaboration with the President's Office and Finance Ministry to bring about a permanent resolution, which is expected to be reached soon.
The increased power cuts over the past five days are due to three generators having to be repaired due to technical issues, he said. He said that repairs of one of these generators have now been completed, and it will be made operational today.
'With this generator, as well as the new 1.8MW generator that's been brought in being put to use, I believe we will be able to solve the issue for now. With is being Ramadan, the peak usage increased during the afternoons. There was too much load with ovens and such appliances being used at the same time. But, we believe it will decrease after Ramadan ends," he said.
Najah assured that Fenaka is working steadfastly to resolve the issue of power cuts in Addu.
"There are two generators even now that needs a complete overhaul. We will get time to use that when this new 1.8MW generator is put in use," he said.
