Prosecutor General's Office (PGO) has officially pressed charges against two individuals suspected to have been involved in the theft of a car belonging to the Managing Director of Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) today.

The car was stolen last April while parked at Velana International Airport in Hulhulé. It was later found in a residential home in Malé.

PG Office revealed that Mohamed Haisham, an MACL staff and Ahmed Nizaam, both originally from Malé City, were charged with unauthorised possession of another person's property in the case.

With the case now sent to the Criminal Court, they face a prison sentence of up to three years and two months if convicted.

Apart from the original charge, Nizaam is also charged with damage of property and alteration of an object with the intent to defraud a person for scraping off the vehicles engine number and chassis number in an attempt to disguise it.

According to the PG Office, the stolen vehicle is worth USD 34,560.

During the investigation process of this case, authorities also unearthed a large scale scam network where a large number of vehicles are registered under false pretences.

While over 100 vehicles are believed to have been registered through this network, Police say the chassis number of some vehicles have been changed.
