Ruling coalition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People's National Congress (PNC) have issued a statement calling for the investigation on the attack against Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem to be expedited.
The coalition expressed deep concerns regarding the attack on a senior official of the State in a statement released today.
The coalition called on the State to dedicate all its authority, resources, and capacity to expedite the investigation, identify those behind the attack, and bring them to justice.
Affirming cooperation with the government as the ruling coalition, the parties called on Government leaders to prioritize the security of high ranking officials of the State and other citizens.
Police are currently investigating the attack on PG Shameem that happened early this morning.
As learned so far, the two attackers were on a motorcycle and followed the PG since he left home for his morning run at dawn.
The two people were attempting to conceal their identity by wearing helmets.
After Shameem finished his exercise routine, he returned home. He then left the house again to drop off his child at school.
Shameem was attacked in front of his home near Noor Mosque while he was returning home after the school drop off.
The attackers attempted to hit Shameem on the head with a hammer, however Shameem managed to take defensive action, resulting in him sustaining injuries to his left forearm instead.
The PPM/PNC coalition's statement claims that such attacks targeted towards disrupting the peace, and obstructing the work of persons holding important responsibilities of the State are violent, terrorist attacks.
The statement also refers to media reports indicating that this was a premeditated attack, noting the importance of conducting thorough investigations into this to reach the truth of the matter.
