The Regional Airports Company Limited (RACL) has announced that it will increase ground handling fees at six domestic airports it manages.

RACL charges a ground handling fee from inbound flights for services such as cargo and ramp services rendered between landing and takeoff.

According to RACL's managing director, Mohamed Rizvy, the current ground handling fees were set 15 years ago and need to be updated. He said that the decision was made in an effort to increase the company's revenues.

"We are currently holding internal discussions regarding the matter," Rizvy said.

Although the company plans to increase ground handling fees at multiple domestic airports, he assured that prices will not exceed a 10 percent increase.

The RACL has not stated when the new prices will go into effect, but it is expected within the next two to three months.

RACL currently operates Hoarafushi Airport in Haa Alifu atoll; Hanimaadhoo Airport and Kulhudhuffushi Airport in Haa Dhaalu atoll; and Funadhoo Airport in Shaviyani atoll in the Maldives' North. It also overseen Maavarulu Airport in Gaafu Dhaalu atoll and Fuvahmulah Airport in Gnaviyani atoll, in the Maldives' south.

In January this year, Kaadehdhoo Airport, which is managed by the Villa Group reportedly increased its ground handling fees by 400 percent.

Airlines operating in the Maldives, which mainly depend on tourism as a source of income, are likely to be impacted by RACL's move.
