Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef has called for full accountability for the unconstitutional actions of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's government.

He made these remarks in response to statements by former Finance Minister Ibrahim Ameer, who said that more than MVR 2 billion in state budget expenditures had not been recorded in the Ministry of Finance's system.

In a post on X, VP Hussain criticized the previous government, accusing it of using its supermajority to cover up wrongdoings, including hiding details of aid received during the Covid-19 pandemic.

He said that the former administration should be held accountable for actions that violated the constitution.

Speaking on the matter, Ameer said that the discrepancies in financial statements were not the result of misconduct, but rather due to the common practice of recording expenditures for funded projects as documents are received and completed.

Current Finance Minister Moosa Zameer weighed in during a press conference, stating that former Finance Minister Mohamed Shafeeq had halted a financial report mid-year after discovering major discrepancies in expenditures.

Zameer added that by 2023, foreign financial institutions had disbursed between MVR 1.5 billion and MVR 2 billion for foreign-aided projects. He also revealed that this year's budget must accommodate MVR 2.5 billion in bills requested to be posted from previous years.

Attorney General Ahmed Usham said that approximately MVR 2 billion was spent last year without being recorded.

He said that recording past expenditures this year would be illegal, and a legal remedy is being sought.

Usham emphasized that the constitution mandates that expenditures align with the approved budget for the year, and those responsible for the oversight will face action.
