Elections Commission (EC) has condemned remarks made against President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s child during the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s ongoing protests in Male'.
Senior MDP activist Mariyam Zubair (Mandhee)’s comments, which have been widely circulated on social media, have drawn criticism from various quarters, including the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM).
HRCM stated that freedom of expression should not be misused to harm the dignity and reputation of children.
EC reiterated that political parties are allowed to conduct activities within the limits set by the Constitution, the Political Party Act, and other applicable laws. It urged MDP to adhere to the Freedom of Peaceful Assembly Act during its demonstrations.
The commission further condemned unsubstantiated statements that violate children's rights and affect their dignity and mental well-being, as outlined in the Children's Rights Protection Act.
Additionally, EC called on all political parties to avoid inciting anger and hatred, making personal attacks, and spreading baseless claims, emphasizing the importance of following the Code of Conduct under Section 45 of the Political Party Act.
The commission reaffirmed its support for lawful political activities within the established legal framework.
