The Ninety Plus Gold Cup kicks off tomorrow at the National Football Stadium, with the opening match featuring Fuvahmulah against Kudahuvadhoo.
Both teams are part of Group A, which also includes Gaafu Dhaalu atoll Fares-Maathodaa, Dhaalu atoll Meedhoo, and Haa Alifu atoll Dhidhdhoo.
Fuvahmulah's team is coached by former national team defender Sobah Mohamed Ibrahim (Soba), while Kudahuvadhoo which is known for its strong presence in atoll football, previously won the Minivan Championship in 2017.
Gold Cup, organized with the goal of rekindling excitement for football across the country, features 17 teams. The tournament will run until December 25, with all matches broadcast live on TV.
Ninety Plus stated that the Gold Cup is the largest privately hosted football tournament in Maldives to date.
Thursday evening will see Fares-Maathodaa face Dhaalu Meedhoo.
