President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has expressed disapproval over the remarks made by Minister of Environment and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim, against former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.

At the official campaign event held at Dhuvaafaru, Raa Atoll, the environment minister had called the joint opposition a “cocktail coalition” and stated that the former president Maumoon had not brought any developments to the nation of Maldives in his 30-year rule.

Speaking after Minister Thoriq, President Yameen urged not to speak against and tarnish the services that his estranged half-brother Maumoon has provided for the nation. The president declared that Maumoon brought major developments to the country and served the nation well during his presidency, further stating that he was the leader who was responsible for the development of Dhuvaafaru.

“I think the objective of [Thoriq's] statements was to declare that the expectations of citizens have increased and that for today’s development, the citizens expect many major projects in return and that the person capable of bringing about these changes is President Yameen”, the incumbent president stated while rectifying the belittling comment made by Minister Thoriq.

While the president urged against smearing of Maumoon’s reputation, the government has been reluctant to act on the advice of Maumoon’s doctors to transfer him to house arrest, amidst concerns raised over his ailing health.

The 80-year-old Maumoon, serving his one and a half year prison sentence in Maafushi Prison, was arrested under the accusation of being involved with opposition leaders in the bribery case of the Supreme Court’s landmark ruling in early February, but was later convicted for obstructing justice after he refused to present his mobile phone to the police for investigation.
