The company in China who constructed the Hiya Flats has proposed to build 15,000 housing units in Ras Male’, the State’s new development project.

During a press conference held at the president’s office yesterday, Policy Secretary Abdulla Nazim said that China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCE) has proposed to build 15,000 housing units in Ras Male’.

Hence, the Economic Council has decided to negotiate cost and quality with the Housing and Infrastructure Ministry.

In order to develop Ras Male’—a modern mega city, 1,153 hectares of land is arranged to be reclaimed in Fushidhiggaru Falhu. Construction and Infrastructure Minister, Dr. Abdulla Muththalib said that 10 hectares of land has been reclaimed and a bund wall has currently been placed to reclaim an additional 29 hectares.

Speaking to PSM News, he stated that a Maldivian delegation will depart to China in order to inspect the technology used in the housing project. Examining the information provided by the company, Muththalib said that they can conclude the construction of 12,000 housing units within 2 and a half years.

During the ceremony to commence the Ras Male’ reclamation project on 18 December 2023, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu had announced that 65,000 housing projects will be established in Ras Male’, including land plots and flats.

However, no additional information has been released as of yet. The reclamation project was contracted to a Sri Lankan company, Capital Marine and Civil Construction Company (CMCC) who had reclaimed 10 hectares of land within 1 week of commencement.

The project incurs no reliance on the state’s budget as a compensation of 70 hectares of land on a long-term lease has been agreed on by CMCC. This land includes 60 hectares from RasMale’ and 10 hectares from Hulhumale'.

Muththalib has previously said that over USD 700 million (MVR 10.7 billion) would be expended by the contractor for the reclamation of Fushidhiggaru Falhu.
