With issues of power outages in the connected islands of Addu having persisted over months and increased public dissatisfaction, a 1.8 megawatt generator will be taken to Addu, Fenaka Corporation has said.

In a statement, Fenaka said that three of the generator sets at the Central Power Station providing electricity to Hithadhoo and connected islands are facing technical issues, and another one is damaged beyond repair.

Due to this, the company has been facing difficulties in producing sufficient electricity, leading to disconnecting electricity in different areas at intervals, and are now seeking a resolution to the issue.

"As such, a new 1.8 megawatt generator set has been sourced through an agreement with the State Electric Company, and it has now been loaded onto the landing craft to take to Addu," Fenaka said.

The company said one of the damaged generators have been repaired and is in use now, and a second generator will be repaired by the end of the week. The third generator will also be repaired within the coming week, with spare parts being brought for it from abroad.

Fenaka said that Ramadan each year sees a spike in electricity use. Due to this, they are working to resolve the issues so as to meet the demand in Addu.

"Addu's electricity issues are the result of long term negligence, and it is evident today that no sincere efforts have been made before to resolve these issues," the statement reads.

The company said that their target is to find a complete solution to the electricity issues in Addu within one and a half years.

Addu's connected islands have been facing frequent power outages since mid-2024.
