Under the new policy, individuals will be required to utilize their private insurance for healthcare costs before Aasandha coverage is activated.
National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) has said that under the reform to the Aasandha health insurance scheme, starting tomorrow, the scheme will only cover free healthcare after other enrolled insurance schemes have reached their limits.
In a statement, NSPA emphasized its commitment to ensuring that the national social health insurance system provides high quality basic health services to Maldivians in a sustainable manner.
Under the new policy, individuals will be required to utilize their private insurance for healthcare costs before Aasandha coverage is activated. NSPA said that those with private insurance will be able to access Aasandha services only after their insurance package limit has been exhausted.
“To ensure a smooth and transparent process, this measure will be implemented in phases, separately for outpatient and inpatient services,” the statement read.
Beginning tomorrow, outpatient services at both government and private healthcare facilities will first bill private insurance if the individual has coverage.
Customers are encouraged to obtain receipts when using Aasandha services and report any discrepancies to NSPA’s "Shikaavathi" chatline at 7951400.
While another framework for Aasandha usage is being developed for those using other insurance schemes, the State is also preparing to implement several cost cutting measures aimed at reducing unnecessary government expenditure.
Recent statistics released by the Ministry of Finance reveal that over MVR 918 million has been spent on the Aasandha scheme between January and June this year. This represents nearly 50 percent of the MVR 1.9 billion allocated for Aasandha in the annual budget.
