Police have forwarded cases against the thirteen prison officers arrested on charges of smuggling contraband into Maafushi Prison to the Prosecutor General's Office.
Police have forwarded cases against the thirteen prison officers arrested on charges of smuggling contraband into Maafushi Prison to the Prosecutor General's Office.
The thirteen officers were arrested for being involved in a network smuggling illegal substances and mobile phones into Maafushi Prison. They were arrested under a special operation where authorities suspected involvement of officers' involvement in smuggling contraband, and conducted investigations.
Police said then that eighteen prison officers were allegedly involved in the supply of drugs and mobile phones to prisoners in Maafushi prison.
A total of MVR 24 million has been deposited into the account of one officer over several occasions. Police also said that a total of MVR 73.6 million has been transferred to the accounts of the 18 employees involved in the case since January of last year.
Police have revealed details of the 13 officers. They are:

6. Mohamed Nabeel Ibrahim, 21, M. Meydhaa
7. Ali Nazim, 36, Tharana, Haa Dhaalu atoll Neykurandhoo
8. Zayan Ahmed, 23, Maavina, Kaafu atoll Maafushi
9. Yameen Hussain, 23, Hijaaz, Raa atoll Meedhoo
10. Ahmed Shamaal, 24, Fahaage, Shaviyani atoll Foakaidhoo
11. Mohamed Rimaz, 29, Dhambumaage, Shaviyani atoll Foakaidhoo
12. Ali Ashfaq, 32, Kaamineege, Noonu atoll Landhoo

Police have also said that in addition to smuggling in contraband, investigations have also shown that there is prison officer complicity in major scams conducted by Maafushi prison inmates.
