The system, placed at the Maldives National University's Centre for Maritime Studies campus in Vilimale', shows that the current air quality index in Vilimale' is at 156, which is a risk to health.
Air quality in the Male' area has been worsening over the past couple of days.
Health Protection Agency has urged the public to:
- reduce going out
- wear masks if going out
- close doors and windows to prevent polluted air from entering homes
- persons with lung diseases, heart diseases and allergies to avoid going out
- pregnant women, senior citizens and children to avoid going out
- avoid taking infants out
- limit outdoor sports and exercises
The Air Quality Monitoring System at the Shaviyani atoll Council shows that the air quality index in that area is at 76, while the system in Laamu atoll Gan shows the area's air quality index at 82.
At these levels, sensitive groups should avoid being outdoors and take precautions.
