The State Electric Company (STELCO) said the that the Greater Malé area recorded the highest electricity consumption on April 11, 2023.

According to a tweet by the Managing Director of STELCO, Ahmed Shareef, the islands in the Greater Malé area, including Male’, Vilimalé, and Hulhumalé, consumed over 92.5 megawatts of electricity on that day.

He said that this usage is expected to increase in the coming weeks.

The Maldives is currently experiencing its hottest season of the year, and Shareef has advised consumers to conserve electricity. The utility provider has urged customers to economize usage since electricity consumption rises significantly during the hot season.

"Although STELCO has the capacity to produce 120 megawatts of electricity, we advise everyone to economize its usage," Shareef said.

The Maldives Meteorological Center (MET) has also advised the public to take precautions during the season.

The Maldives Meteorological Center (MET) reported that the Malé area will experience temperatures up to 39.3 degrees Celsius, while Kadhdhoo and Hanimaadhoo will experience temperatures up to 40.4 degrees Celsius, with the hottest period each day being around 2:00 p.m.
