The Maldives Meteorological Center (MET) has urged the public to take safety precautions as air temperatures continue to rise.

The maximum feels-like temperature in the Malé area has reached 39.3 degrees Celsius, while in Laamu atoll Kadhdhoo and Haa Dhaalu atoll Hanimaadhoo, feels-like temperatures are expected to rise even further to 40.4 degrees Celsius.

April is known to be the warmest month of the year across the Maldives, with the highest temperature records observed at 2 p.m. daily.

Symptoms of heat exhaustion

- Heavy sweating

- Cold, pale, clammy skin

- Weakness and fainting

- Dry, hot, red, burned skin

- Vomitting

- Fast, weak pulse

Ways to prevent heat exhaustion

- Drink plenty of water

- Limit sun exposure

- Avoid playing sports and other outdoor activities during mid-day

- Avoid liquids with high amounts of sugar and caffeine

- Wear loose, light coloured clothing

- Use UV filter sunglasses, hats and apply sunscreen when outdoors.

Statistics reveal the warmest temperatures in the Maldives are experienced in the northern regions. Over the past 29 years, Hanimaadhoo has maintained an average temperature of 29.7 degrees Celsius during the month of April. Central Maldives come in second with Hulhule recording an average temperature of 29.6 degrees Celsius during the same period. Seenu atoll Gan in the southern Maldives has experienced an average temperature of 28.8 degrees Celsius during April for the past 29 years.

The MET office reported that during this period, winds weaken significantly and high humidity stagnates, causing the feels-like temperature to soar many times above the recorded air temperature.
