Maldives is bracing for strong winds and rough seas starting Wednesday, December 18.

The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) has warned that two low-pressure areas are likely to develop in the Bay of Bengal today and another in the far south of Maldives during this week, with a westward movement.

These weather systems will result in strong winds impacting the country starting Wednesday and persisting for the next five days.

Winds in the southern and central atolls are projected to reach speeds of 17 to 27 miles per hour, while winds in the northern atolls will be a bit lighter, between 13 and 23 miles per hour. The seas will also become rough, especially in the central and southern atolls, with very rough conditions in these areas.

Maldives will also experience squally thundershowers with possible gusts up to 40 to 55 miles per hour. Swell waves are possible in the southern and central atolls, MET office said.

MET has advised everyone, especially seafarers, to stay updated on the weather and take necessary precautions to stay safe during this period of bad weather.
