President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reached a decision to decrease pay by 10 percent of all political appointees in the government, senior State officials and management of State Owned Enterprises.

In a post on social media platform X tonight, the President stated when the State budget for next year is proposed to parliament, many measures will be taken to cut down State expenditures in line with the economic reform agenda.

As such, the President has decided to decrease by ten percent the salaries of government's political appointees, management figures of SOEs, as well as parliament members.

In addition to this, the President has also decided to bring down his own pay by 50 percent. At present, the President receives a monthly pay of MVR 100,000. With the amendment, this will be brought down to MVR 50,000 per month.

Decisions reached by the President

- 10 percent to be decreased from pay of all political appointees

- !0 percent to be decreased from staff of all government shareholding companies except for banks. Company leaders can be given a monthly pay not increasing MVR 90,000

- Proposing to relevant authorities to bring down pay of independent institution members, also by 10 percent

The President said that employees who receive monthly salaries of MVR 12,000 and below will be exempt from these deductions.

Last week, the President also announced that 228 political appointees will be dismissed under efforts to reduce expenditure. He said that this action alone would save MVR 5.7 million for the State.
