President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced today that the government is working to cancel all agreements for stalled development projects across various islands, signed under the previous administration, and reassign them to new contractors.
His remarks were made during his last stop of the three day visit to 10 islands of Haa Alifu atoll - Uligan.
Speaking to the residents there, the president said that the previous administration assigned projects in way that they could not be completed.
According to Dr. Muizzu, 21 projects were assigned to one company, with advance payments. However, no work was carried out in any of the islands, he said.
Various projects in the health and education sectors were also assigned in the same way, he said.
He further added that even though the projects were assigned, they could not be carried out because funds were not included in the budget for last year. He also said the projects were awarded to small and medium enterprises and that it was not done in a way that would allow for the projects to be completed.
The president said even the water and sewerage projects in some of the islands he visited earlier had come to a halt due to such practices.
Because of this, the government is cancelling the previous agreements and are in the process of being handed over to government-controlled companies, he said.
"Every island has the same problem and [the project] is stopped. Because of this, the agreements will be terminated and restarting the projects with various government-controlled, already mobilised companies has been in the works the past week, this week and in the coming weeks," he said.
The president said these projects will resume next month.
