After raiding a guesthouse in Malé on Tuesday night, the Maldives Police Service arrested four people for soliciting prostitution.
A local man, a foreign man, and two foreign women were arrested from "Roalhi" guesthouse in the capital city. The two men are 43-year-olds, and the women are 31-years-old and 36-years-old. The police did not divulge their names or their nationalities.
The raid was conducted based on a tip they received about sex workers operating in the guesthouse, the police said in a tweet.
They also specified, saying that the Maldivian man and one of the foreign women were caught and arrested while they were engaging in sexual relations.
The case is now being investigated.
As of lately, there has been an increase in solicitation cases, and the authorities have been scrutinised for their lack of action. The police have previously conducted similar operations where local and foreign sex workers were arrested.
In an effort to combat the issue, the Ministry of Economic Affairs has even enforced strict regulations on spas operating on residential islands, as a lot of brothels are run under the pretence of being spas.
