President's Office Spokesperson Heena Waleed has said that the government has no plans to introduce a law regulating journalism and the internet.
In a post on X, she said that such a bill was not included in the government’s legislative agenda and that there is no intention to propose one in the future.
The government supports a self-regulatory system and continues to prioritize maintaining the widest possible freedom of the press, Heena said.
However, Ahmed Nazim, a member of the ruling party People's National Congress (PNC) and Deputy Speaker of Parliament, has expressed his intention to submit a bill to regulate journalism and the internet.
He stated that this initiative is necessary because the existing self-regulatory system for journalism is not effective. It is believed that he is working on the bill independently.
Earlier, Thulhaadhoo MP Hannaan Aboobakuru introduced the Media Commission Bill, which was later withdrawn after journalists raised concerns. The government had made it clear that they did not support or advocate for the bill, at the time.
