PG Abbas assured that he will refrain from compromising his integrity during this tenure.
Prosecutor General Abbas Shareef said yesterday that no one would be able influence or intimidate him to carryout his duties in a specific way.
Speaking at the first press briefing since his appointment on September 18, Abbas said that no accusations were levelled against him even during his five years as a High Court judge.
Prior to being appointed as Prosecutor General, he previously worked at the legal section of the President's Office.
"Although I previously worked at the President's Office, and although I was in charge of the legal matters of the President, now I am not in that position. I am now the Prosecutor General. So if the people I worked with are able to influence me, there will be a lot of people in the Maldives who would be able to do so," he said.
Having said that, Abbas assured that he would be able to carry out his duties without any influence.
"So, it is with 100 percent certainty that I say, no one would be able to influence me. No one would even be able to intimidate me," the former judge said.
He also added that he would resign if it comes to the point where any one or any institution forces him to change a decision. He went on to say that he would remain in office so long as there is room to work freely as granted by the law.
"The day a person or institution influences me and forces me to change my decision will be the day I leave this position. If I need to resign and step down tomorrow, I will," he said.
According to Abbas, all decisions regarding cases will be made based on his own judgement.
Former Prosecutor General Hussain Shaheem had resigned earlier in September following allegations of mishandling some cases.
Prosecutor General's Office has announced that they will be accepting applications for review of charges pressed in criminal cases and related detention.
The deadline for submitting review applications is October 20.
