Maldives Airports Company Private Limited (MACL) revealed that 83 private jets landed at Velana International Airport (VIA) within five days.

Corporate Communication's General Manager for MACL, Hassan Areef, said that the 83 jets landed in VIA from December 25 to December 31.

For the same period of time in 2017, only 55 private jets landed in VIA.

Areef stated some of the flights were held back due to heavy incoming traffic. He added that air traffic is expected to increase over the coming week.

Areef noted that the airport was becoming crowded because of the increase in arrivals. However, he assured that their operations would not cause difficulties for passengers.

Additionally, Areef said that MACL staff has been working hard to provide services to the passengers.

The number of tourists visiting Maldives increases annually in time for Christmas. On December 23 this year, VIA observed total 729 flight movements, breaking the previous record of 644 movements in January.

MACL served 21,992 passengers on December 23, including 17,723 international passengers and 4,269 domestic travellers.
