Supreme Court Judge Husnu Suood submitted his official resignation to the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) today, after the commission earlier decided to proceed with investigation allegations against Suood.

JSC made the decision claiming that although Suood had submitted his resignation to President Dr Mohamed Muizzu today, he had not sent it to the commission as required by the law.

Suood, later sent his resignation to JSC after the committee's meeting held at 13:00 hrs.

In his letter addressed to JSC's President Hussain Riyaz, Suood accused incumbent President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's administration of trying to influence the constitutional case before the Supreme Court, seeking to quash a recent anti-defection amendment to the constitution.

He also highlighted that three Supreme Court judges have been suspended along with a new amendment to the law downsizing the Supreme Court's bench from seven to five. Suood described this as an attempt to intimidate and influence all the Supreme Court judges.

In light of this, Suood wrote that he was resigning with immediate effect in protest.

This comes while Suood, along with Supreme Court Justice Mahaz Ali Zahir and Dr Azmiralda Zahir remain suspended - a move that came into effect just 15 minutes before a hearing on the anti-defection case was due to begin.

According to reports, the three judges were suspended due to an ongoing Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) investigation.

The parliament passed the bill to downsize the Supreme Court bench from seven to five last week. Although the bill was passed quickly within the parliament despite opposing views from the opposition and those in the legal field, President Muizzu is yet to ratify it.
