Maldives Customs Service has seized a kilo of drugs which were being smuggled into the country via sea.
In a press statement issued last night, Customs said that a total of 1.518kg of drugs had been seized.
It said that the drugs had been seized through inspecting a sea freight shipment brought to the Male' Commercial Harbour. Customs had conducted a thorough search based on suspicions that the shipment carried illegal goods.
Customs said that the drugs had been concealed within the goods in the shipment.
Initial rapid testing showed the contents to be methamphetamine, they said, with a street value of over MVR 3 million.
Customs said that the seized drugs have now been handed over to the Police for further investigation.
