President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih slammed previous governments late Wednesday, declaring that Maldives was a century behind other countries in terms of providing essential services in all islands.
Speaking at the campaign rally of Ibrahim Naseer, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s candidate for the constituency of Mulah, Meemu Atoll, President Solih stated that provision of essential services such as water and sewerage systems to all citizens should be the priority of any nation leader.
"Anything else should come after that. This was done and completed in other countries 100 years ago. In comparison, our development plan is lagging 100 years behind", he said.
Noting that the archipelago is a developing nation, President Solih went on to claim that essential services are already established in less developed countries.
He attributed the situation in Maldives to the negligence of previous administrations.
President Solih asserted that his government was working from the first day to fulfill its pledges to provide essential services for all citizens.
He vowed to developed roads and protect eroded areas in Mulah, and establish classrooms, a multipurpose hall, roads, and provide housing in Kolhufushi. Further reiterating his pledge to develop an airport in the atoll, the president vowed to complete the project by the end of his first term.
