Minister of Education Dr Ismail Shafeeu has said that teachers' capacity-building centers will be established across the Maldives.

One of the Minister's top priorities is to improve the professional capacity of teachers, and as part of this, centres named "Education Center for Excellence" will be established in various regions of the country.

This initiative aims to enhance professional development for teachers and principals, as well as strengthen school evaluations.

In addition, the minister highlighted that a new system will replace the current MEMIS (Maldives Education Management Information System), which tracks student educational records. The new system will enable better management of both student and teacher information, allowing the ministry to make evidence-based decisions. It will also facilitate information sharing across agencies when necessary.

It is a presidential pledge of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu to strengthen the education sector by increasing the number of Maldivian teachers. A programme to support this initiative was launched last month to train at least 150 teachers each year.

Currently, over 2,000 teachers are required across 20 atolls. The ministry is providing scholarships to over 140 students pursuing masters degrees in teaching.

These students will also receive a stipend of MVR 1,500 per month.

This year alone, 640 individuals have enrolled in degree courses as a result of the ministry's efforts to travel to the atolls and encourage more Maldivians to enter the teaching profession.
