According to the most recent census report, the pregnancy rate in the Maldives is at an alarmingly low percentile.
The 2022 census report was released on Tuesday, July 11, commemorating the World Population Day.
The census report raised concerns about the declining birth rate in the Maldives, indicating that women in the country conceive an average of 1.7 children.
The average number of children conceived was 2.5 in 2014, 2.2 in 2002, 2.8 in 2000, and as high as 6.4 in 1994.
The report highlighted the implications of reduced childbirth on population growth, emphasizing that the infant birth rate in the Maldives has fallen below the replacement level, indicating that the number of births does not exceed the mortality rate, resulting in a decline in population.
The report highlighted that the average age of marriage for women in the Maldives is 20, while for men, it is 24. The report also revealed that 69 percent of the Maldivian population is married, while nine percent are divorced, and 19 percent have never been married.
