High Court on Thursday ruled that the current opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)'s Congress was legitimate.
In the verdict, the appellate court also overturned the Elections Commission's decision to not endorse PPM's Congress. The High Court ruled that the PPM's Congress was in accordance with the party's charter and the General Elections Act.
An official from EC stated on Thursday that they respect the court's decision. However, the official added that since there are some issues that seem concerning to EC, they will appeal the verdict.
The Elections Commission also ordered to register all those who were appointed to PPM's leadership posts under the commission within the next 24 hours.
During the congress held in September, former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom was elected as party leader. Furthermore, MP Abdulla Abdul Raheem, former Tourism Minister Moosa Zameer, former Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed and former Legal Affairs Minister for the President's Office Azima Shukoor was elected as Vice Presidents.
In addition to the appointments, 10 amendments were brought to the party charter in September's Congress.
