Scheduled power cuts in Fuvahmulah due to faulty generator

Malfunctioning of a generator set last month has resulted in the insufficient electricity produce to supply the island, resulting in electricity interruptions at scheduled time intervals, as notified by an apologetic Fenaka.

Due to the lack of sufficient electricity production as a result of the damage to a generator used to supply the island with electricity, Fenaka Corporation has said that various neighborhood in the city will be experiencing electricity interruptions during scheduled time intervals. The generator set has been out of service since January 11.

A press release by Fenaka issued an apology to the locals due to the difficulties they will face as a result of the unavoidable scheduled electricity interruptions. The company assured that they are working to resolve the issue.

As per the press release, the highest electricity load recorded in the city was 4,850 kilo watts. They also clarified that the average highest load is 4,050 kilo watts.

In order to provide the city of Fuvahmulah with electricity, seven generators are in use. This includes two 8000 kilo watt generator sets, three 1200 kilo watt generator sets, and one set of both 600 and 1000 kilowatts generators. The generator that ceased to function was one of the 800 kilowatts generator sets.

Fenaka said that with this generator set out of service, electricity production has decreased to 4000 kilowatts.

As the generator was broken during a bad weather period, electricity suspension was not necessary at the time, however, Fenaka stated that with the weather improvement, electricity consumption rate has also increase, making the scheduled power cuts starting from the 11th of this month now unavoidable.

The company said that despite beginning efforts to transfer an 800-kilowatt generator in use at another island to quickly resolve the issue in Fuvahmulah, after considering the possible public discord that may arise as a result of the transfer, the attempt was cancelled.

Despite commencing work to attain the required generator under the company’s emergency procurement department, the press reveal stated that it will require a few more days as the country does not currently have an 800-kilowatt generator in stock in the market.

In addition to working to attain a new generator, maintenance work is also being done on the misfunctioned generator in order to restore it back to working conditions.

Fenaka stated that they are working diligently to ensure the electricity in locals island is functioning effectively by the time Ramadan and the hot season approaches. Fuvahmulah is designated as one of the islands that will receive new generator sets at the possible earliest, with a 1,200-kilowatt generator set to be provided in addition to the replacement of the recently broken 800-kilowatts generator.

According to Fenaka, the cause for the malfunctioning of generators in island around the country is due to a lack of maintenance.
