A Police media official said that by Sunday, nine persons have been fined for acting against the Tobacco Control act. This amounts to a total of MVR 50,000 in fines.
One of the individuals was fined an additional MVR 10,000 for smoking an e-cigarette while driving a motorcycle, Police said.
As per the law, use of vapes result in a fine of MVR 5000. The fine for distribution of vapes is MVR 10,000, and MVR 20,000 for sale of vapes. For each unit sold, a fine of MVR 10,000 is also levied.
If vapes are sold to persons under the minimum age of 21 for tobacco sale, then the fine rises to MVR 50,000.
Police said that the fine notification would be sent to the offender's mobile phone via a text message. Payments can be made through going to a link included in the text to Vaaru Pay.
