The Civil Service Commission has informed staff of the Ministry of Housing, Land and Urban Development that there may need to be some dismissals following the dissolving of said ministry.
On December 26, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu dissolved the housing ministry, instead forming the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure. With this, the staff who had been working at the Housing Ministry had been transferred under the Construction Ministry.
Civil Service Commission sent an email to these employees where they said that the commission is working on transferring relevant employees to the Construction Ministry and Finance Ministry according to the change in mandate.
With the administrative changes brought to these ministries, the Commission is also working on revising their administrative structures.
The Commission said that those being transferred to those ministries will be done in accordance with the number of slots available on the administrative structure after review. If the number of employees is higher than the available slots, then those who will be kept on will be determined on merit under Article 225 (b) of the Civil Service Regulations, they said.
The Commission said that the work of the Corporate Department of the Housing Ministry has not been transferred to any other ministry. Hence, staff employed in this department are not eligible for transfers.
They, however, said that under the Policy on Dismissing Civil Service Staff, attempts will be made to replace their jobs with an appropriate position elsewhere. In the instance this cannot be done, then they will be dismissed in accordance with the policy.
The Commission further said that staff hired on contracts by the Housing Ministry would be let go after issuing notice as per the agreements made with them.
The Commission notified staff of these changes, and has asked for a list with signatures to be sent back indicating receipt.
The previous building from which the Housing Ministry was operated burnt down in a major fire incident on December 12. They were then temporarily working out of Dharubaaruge. The merging of the Housing MInistry and Construction Ministry was decided upon after this.
