Senior Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) activist Mariyam Zubair (Mandhi) was attacked with black oil last night while returning home on a motorcycle after participating in a MDP led protest.
The attack occurred as two masked individuals wearing helmets followed her from Majeedhee Magu before throwing the oil at her.
Police said that they received a report of the incident at 1:06 a.m. and stated that an investigation is underway.
The attack comes amid heightened political tensions, as the President’s family has decided to sue MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail, Mariyam, and the party over remarks made at a recent rally.
During the protest, Mariyam had alleged that the ban on vapes in Maldives was due to President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s eldest son Umair using vapes. The President’s family has denied the claim.
“I take this opportunity to state that Umair does not or has [not] smoked vape or even tobacco in any way," First Lady Sajidha Mohamed said in a statement last Saturday.
