Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has called on the government to refrain from doing anything that may compromise trust in Bank of Maldives (BML). He said that public confidence in the bank must be maintained for the sake of citizens.

In a post on social media platform X, he highlighted the importance of maintaining absolute trust in the bank as it is connected to the livelihoods of many citizens and business persons.

"Even the government should not do anything that may compromise trust in BML. If trust in the bank is lost, that is a huge loss to society at large," he said.

Last month, the bank announced, and later revoked, a decision to disallow foreign transactions on cards linked to Maldivian Rufiya accounts.

Following this, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu alleged that the move is a financial coup attempted through the bank. Although police are investigating the claims of a coup, no information has been released as of yet of any suspects.a

BML's CEO Karl Stumke has since submitted his resignation, with coming Saturday slated to be his last day in the position.

The Government has yesterday submitted the name of President's Office Cabinet Secretary Ahmed Ali Habeeb to the Privatization and Corporatization Board to be appointed as Chairperson of BML.
