Mohamed Shimal has been appointed as the new Director General of the Maldives Marine Research Institute (MMRI).
In a post on the social media platform X, MMRI highlighted Shimal's significant contributions to the agency's growth over the past decade, particularly in developing its research programs.

Shimal, who has been with MMRI since 2015, previously served as Senior Research Officer.
He holds degrees in Marine Biology and Wildlife and Conservation Biology.
Shimal’s appointment follows the resignation of former Director General Shafiya Naeem in January. Shafiya, who spent 24 years at MMRI, served as the agency’s DG for six years.
MMRI, an agency under the Ministry of Fisheries, conducts various studies related to the marine environment of Maldives.
