WAMCO recently announced that they will charge MVR 35 for bundles of standard-size bags for waste collection.

While the sale of bin liners for waste collection will start on Thursday, April 27, customers can purchase bin liners for waste collection from the front office of WAMCO's main building and from the customer front offices of their waste transfer stations in Malé, Vilimalé, and Hulhumalé.

A bundle of normal or L size bin liners (17 inches) will consist of 100 bags priced at MVR 35. A bundle of size XXL (27 inches) is priced at MVR 165. A 50-bag bundle of XXXL (48 inches) will be sold at MVR 165.

Under the Waste Management Act, the state began charging a fee of MVR 2.00 on plastic bags last week, which drew criticism as the public has to pay the fee for every bag used for waste disposal.

However, the Act states that plastic bags sold by waste management companies for waste disposal purposes are exempt from the fee. The act also exempts bags used for packing fresh and raw fish or fish products, and bags issued from duty-free shops.

Earlier, WAMCO had stated that it would sell black and green bin liners in three sizes. The corporation requested customers to pack perishables and other biodegradables in green bin liners and use black bin liners for other waste materials. The company has also requested that the WAMCO-introduced bags be exclusively used for waste disposal.
