Prosecutor General (PG) Hussain Shameem was attacked while his security detail had been halted, and the regulations for providing security to government officials will be reviewed following the incident, the police said today.

PG Shameem was attacked in front of his home near Noor Mosque as he was returning home after dropping his child off at school. He was assaulted by two individuals riding on a motorcycle resulting in Shameem sustaining fractures to his left forearm.

Earlier today, Police announced the arrest of two individuals in connection with the attack on PG Shameem. However, the police did not provide any further details.

Commissioner of Police (CP) Ali Shujau said at a press conference today that the attack on the prosecutor occurred when he was not using security. He added that the security detail provided to senior officials of the State should not be optional, and officials should adhere to the instructions from service providers.

The commissioner said that the current regulation involves providing security to senior officials of the State after conducting a threat assessment. However, he expressed that it is now important to provide 24-hour security to State officials.

Following the attack, PG Shameem's security has been reinforced, and additional bodyguards have been deployed.

Acting Head of Police Crime Investigation Department, Superintendent of Police Ahmed Naafiz, said that PG Shameem did not have a bodyguard with him at the time of the attack, and he had chosen to let go of his security detail at his own discretion.

However, the CP clarified that PG Shameem was being provided security following a threat assessment conducted in connection with a court case that revealed the presence of a threat. The security was discontinued only after it was deemed that the threat was over.

"Therefore, the information provided earlier is not accurate," the CP said.

Commissioner Shujau said that all available resources were utilized to track down those involved in the attack. Two individuals were arrested just one day after the attack as a result of these efforts.

CP Shujau said that the attack on the PG was premeditated and well planned in a manner to conceal the identities of those involved.

The Commissioner asserted that the police services will not allow space for such attacks to be committed in the country, and that the case is being investigated as a high priority matter.
