President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that construction of over 27,000 housing units - 15,000 in Male' area and 12,940 in atolls - will be commenced next year.
The President announced this while speaking last night at a ceremony held at the Social Centre to mark one year in office.
The President noted that the proposed budget for the next year prioritizes housing and said that in it, MVR 1.5 billion is allocated for building homes, as well as MVR 1 billion for housing loans.
"These are all pledges. All pledges. Pledges I made when visiting islands. For example, this includes the flats that will be built in Kulhudhuhfushi City. Thinadhoo, Addu, Fuvahmulah and some other islands as well, I have pledged quoting numbers...30, 50, 100, I have written," he said.
The President said that the housing units will be completed and handed over within this term in office.
"This is a housing budget. So, housing units anew in 41 islands, I have gone to those islands and pledged I will build this many housing units. All these projects will be commenced next year," he said.
