President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has said that changes to the benefits provided for people with disabilities will be announced soon.
Speaking at a ceremony held to mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities held in Raa atoll Alifushi on Thursday night, the President said the state's benefits and assistance to people with disabilities are not only related to social security but also to individuals.
"We will hopefully announce this change soon," President Solih said.
He said that in addition to financial assistance to the disabled, treatment plans for these individuals are already underway and will be further strengthened in the future.
President Solih said people with disabilities are of service to the society. As proof of this, he said, there are people with disabilities who have done outstanding work in handicrafts, agriculture, painting and coming up with new inventions, adding that we will see the benefits if opportunities are provided to them.
"Each of these people may have an ability that that will benefit the entire society. And the may be more capable than others at some things," The President said.
The President said that despite not having a disability, many people are excluded from society and their families. Those under state custody are waiting for their families, he said.
"Even though these people are dependent today, their relatives are living comfortably because of the services and assistance provided them. For that reason, it is necessary to help them with their families," the President said.
The digital portal of the Official National Registry of Persons with Disabilities was launched at the function. The portal was launched by the First Lady Fazna Ahmed.
