People's National Front - the party that former President Abdulla Yameen is trying to establish - has today submitted the minimum required amount of 3000 forms to Elections Commission (EC) to commence formalizing its registration.

With Yameen's son Zain Abdulla Yameen as founder, the Elections Commission gave the go ahead to form the party in November last year. At the time, the party stated they would gather and submit the required number of signatures within a week. However, these efforts faced delays with the party finally completing the submission today.

Former Minister Maleeh Jamal, who is one of the leading figures working for the establishment of the party, has earlier said that the party will be registered at the EC only once Yameen is freed. He said that this is because the party believes in the importance of Yameen's participation in their official inauguration.

Yameen is currently in house arrest under leniencies granted while serving an 11 year prison sentence for convictions for the crimes of money laundering and bribery.

In a post on X today, Jamal declared that the required number of forms had been submitted to EC now, and expressed hope that the commission will grant them permission to hold their inaugural gathering at the earliest.

A political party is registered after submittance of 3000 membership forms, which are then verified by the EC, followed by the completion of the inaugural meeting of the party.
