One arrested in last night's transformer theft

One of the two accused of stealing from a transformer in Hulhumale' Phase 2 and attacking a STELCO employee who attempted to intervene was arrested last night.

One of the two accused of stealing from a transformer in Hulhumale' Phase 2 and attacking a STELCO employee who attempted to intervene was arrested last night.

Police are yet to arrest the second person said to have been involved in the theft and assault.

Police have today released the identity of the man arrested last night.

He is identified as Ibrahim Zalif, 37, of Chanbeylige, Shaviyani atoll Bilehfahi.

STELCO had received reports of electricity going out at the MPL flats around 9.30 pm last night. A staff member had gone to the area where the transformers powering the MPL flats were located, where he saw two persons engaged in theft from the transformer.

He made efforts to detain the thieves, at which point he was beaten around the head with a large wrench. He sustained injuries to his head and jaw, leading to needing treatment at the hospital.

Of the two involved in the theft, Zalif had been caught and handed over to the Police last night.

Police are conducting further investigations into this case.
