Ruling People's National Congress has called to expedite the bill on banning entry into Maldives for Israeli passport holders.
The bill was proposed by opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) MP for Galolhu South Meekail Ahmed Naseem on May 29. The bill remains at committee stage to date.
PNC, which holds a supermajority in parliament, said in a statement released last night that the party supports expediting the bill and bringing about the ban at the earliest, in accordance with the wishes of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.
While the bill remains parked, Attorney General Ahmed Usham has said that passing the bill in the way it is phrased right now could pose difficulties to Maldives.
Usham says that the article banning of entry for all Israeli passport holders needs to be changed. This is because many Palestinians, too, hold Israeli passports, he said.
